Could be worse. A SysAdmin friend was telling me about a case he saw. A construction outfit was driving piles for a project. They were good little boys, and carefully checked the maps for the area to avoid cutting cables. Unfortunately, one map wasn't exactly right.

They punched a pile though about half a major cable, feeding, among other things, a major bank data center up the road doing back office clearing.

The telco dispatched a repair crew. The supervisor said "Pull that pile out! Now!" "Er, we don't think that would be a good idea..." said the construction guys. "I don't care what you think! Pull it out now!"

It had been raining heavily for several days. The ground was soggy. When they pulled up the pile, the water seeped in, and shorted out the other half of the cable...
