Many people love Sony devices, but LOATHE the Sony store and software. It isn't necessary to use the Sony software/reader store to use a Sony.
I am considering asking for a Kindle for Christmas, and have been busy converting books I have purchased elsewhere into mobi format, just in case. (OK, I'm realllllllllllllyyyyyy considering asking for a K3). So, owning a Kindle doesn't lock you into the Amazon store, but it does make it easy to buy books on the fly. Something I can't do with my Sony 300, much as I love it.
