It's the format that makes the world go round.
Kindle likes *.mobi besides his own format but do has problems with epub (although it's possible using some extras). So you need to look for the format of the book when not buying from Amazon.
Be aware of DRM protection !!!!
Kindle can't handle DRM protected books no matter what the format is. Most books sold are DRM protected.
