Thumbs up HTC Shift has shipping date!

Ok, so I was digging around for an alternative to the tiny UMPC I already have trying to find a compromise between it and the TabletPC I also have. Initially I saw a new TabletPC from Fujitsu (Fujitsu FMV-Biblio Loox U50XN) that caught my eye today at PC Depot, but it's screen seemed a bit small for reading full-size PDF's and performing other tasks. Anyway, on with the thread...

I figured a good starting point for screen size would be somewhere between the OQO (5" screen) and my TC1000 (10" screen), so I filtered all the UMPC's listed on UMPCPortal.com to only display UMPC's with screens in the 7" range and voilą! I found info on the HTC Shift.

This device is about to be shipped on Nov 23 in Europe (no news on the U.S. except for over-priced importers). I'm pretty excited about the capabilities of this device as it has a decent size screen for an ultra-portable with a dual-mode processor. The mid-size screen and larger keyboard may be just what I'm looking for in an UMPC, while the slate feature could bridge the gap between my Sony Reader and PDF's I currently have that don't fair so well on the platform. While I don't care too much about the whole cell-phone integration, I might change my mind when I return to the U.S. The Shift all the sorts of cool bells and whistles, including a Windows Mobile PDA mode. The device looks pretty cool and one lucky guy got his hands on one for a video review, so you can see exactly what it looks like short of putting your own paws on it.

Check out the video for more info at: Gotta be Mobile

Edit: Bear with the video, it's long at ~33 minutes, and occassionally you'll hear a lot of background noises going on. The review is actually quite informative if you give it a chance. At the end of the video, around the 29 minute mark, you'll see the Fujitsu UMPC I saw earlier today compared to the Shift (you'll also see the OQO Model 02, which is the same size as my OQO Model 01+); so you can really get a feel for how the extra 2" plays out. I'll be mighty happy if I can get my paws on one of these!
