Actually, Amazon does license Adobe's Mobile Reader SDK for its PDF features.
I have one PDF that is 30Mb and it opens just fine, but I've had some slightly smaller than that that crashed Kindle. Unless the PDF is password protected, you can split larger ones up into pieces that Kindle can load.
