Charels Stross (a pretty good sci-fi author who won the Hugo award this year) actually does not recommend this (pretty good read about the ebook mechanics and book production costs btw).

According to him (and he presents his point rather convincingly) publishers do a fair bit for authors beside just distributing the books and deserve money for this.
So he recommends if one got a "free" ebook and wants pay money for it (but cannot buy the ebook) just to buy a paper copy and throw it in the trash or gift it to someone.
