Hello there again,

Thanks for the pointer.

I had removed all fonts in ~/.fonts & ~/Lirary/Fonts previous to my last post.
However I had corrupted fonts after all. For OSX users there is a simple way to check for broken fonts.

Start the 'Font Book' application.
Select all the fonts.
Then under the file menu select 'Validate Fonts'.
That checks all fonts and shows clearly which ones are broken.
You can subsequently remove the fonts from your system directly from Font Book by selecting them and hitting the backspace...
