thanks guys- after more testing I observe:

1. I can edit caibre metadata for title, which then changes the .mobi file name - but Kindle ignores file names & uses ONLY metadata within file. so for series I've been editing the title & re-coverting in order to get a clear indication of series nunmber within the kindle listings. As kindle width is limited - it's best to have this at start of title, not at right hand side. kindle title sort will then be useful. But you are saying that it's sufficient to edit title then send to device and the title change will be added to metadata on the fly ?

2. after reconverting with separate cover option unticked, I get covers OK in Kindle. I now , by accident - also find a calibre option to add metadata to 1st page of book, which will be neat.

3. am I right in thinking that calibre series tags do not form part of mobi metadata ?

4. maybe at some devlopment point, more of these settigns will be auto-applied when selecting kindle as preferred device in the set up wizard
e.g.
- include metatdata at start of book, dont store covers separately in calibre, supress headers & footers when converting to mobi .... - there may well be others that I've not found yet. or have a FAQ for calibre + Kindle 3 noobs like me ( I don't feel qualified to write that ! )
