Writing fan fiction can be a good exercise in practicing for writing original works too I think. I mean the setting and the characters are already there, but you still have to come up with an original plot that isn't too unbelievable. And you can take what you learn there and apply it towards your own original works with characters and settings that you come up with yourself of course. The plot is the hardest thing to come up with I would think.
