They've rephrased, maybe recanted the claims about the fanfic community being female--they were trying to say that it *is* a majority-female space, one of the few venues that actively welcomes & supports women's creative endeavors. (Romance fiction is another, but that one is fairly strict about what kinds of creativity are accepted.)
Do you have a reference for the claim that slash is the only real/transformative fanfic? Because I can't believe Naomi Novik would say that; it sounds like a phrase taken badly out of context.
