Sounds like he'd like "Redwall" by Brian Jacques. I know it's listed as book 2 in the series, but that was actually the first book written and really should be read before "Mossflower".

And, to put on my Salesperson hat, he may like "Damsel" by S.E. Connolly. Who is my sister! Here's an excerpt.
