It works better for some genres than others. It works for NOW NOW NOW action scenes and for introspection; it's less useful for stories that want a broader overview. It can be exhausting to read, like a movie that's too loud & moving too fast.
I mentioned Haruki Murakami's After Dark earlier in the thread. As well as being written in the present tense it's also written in the plural second person. I think it works really well, but does demand something of the reader.
