Present tense can be used effectively (Kij Johnson won this year's Nebula Award with "Spar," and the story was also a Hugo nominee), but I have only seen a few instances where it seemed like an appropriate style. That said, a week ago I wrote a short story in present tense, and added it to the submission queue... because for that particular story, it seemed like the right choice.
