I don't know, they are pretty tame. They also have a lot about honor and duty in them. While many have some non-graphic death, it is certainly less than today's children see on TV/internet/video games.

They would be hard for a 7-year-old reading at grade level. I know my 7-year-old nephew isn't even reading chapter books yet. But if the OPs son is reading at a 5th grade (10-11yr) level he should be fine with them. I was reading Heinlein by then.

Another series of books I recalled that might be interesting to a young boy are the Tom Corbett space cadet ones. They are in the public domain too.
