And you do not need to rename it to zip, just set epub file association with your zip program and it will be opened just like any other zip file.

I don't even change the epub association, I just right-click and choose Open with… option. Windows will remember the programs you used, so you only need to browse to it once. Other than that I do it exactly like you said and have yet to run into a book that would give the reader trouble.
