Yes Astra, it can be a generic word for tea in some regions. Chai is the word for "tea" in much of South Asia and many other parts of the world. For many English speakers outside those regions, the term "chai" is synonymous with what is more accurately known as masala chai. Most masala chai incorporates one or more of the following: cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, fennel seeds, peppercorn, and cloves. When I use the word chai, I am refering to masala chai. I don't put any milk or sugar in mine though.
