I had a similar issue on my new kindle 3 not connecting to my android phone (HTC Desire) The solution however is simple. Download Wifi Analyzer from the market place and also Wifi Connecter Library. After that my kindle connected with no problems. (run the wifi analyzer first just incase its required)

Post here if it works for ya, should work on other android phones i'd imagine, I am rooted but I dont think its a problem either way.

*after installing these apps, just connect like you would normally e.g turn on wifi hotspot app*
