The first device that I used for reading books was a 386 based PC clone to which I'd added a CD-ROM (NEC 1x device) in the late 1980's. I had a World Library CD and read a few titles.
The first device that I bought specifically to read ebooks was an HP 320LX in 1997. It was used extensively for the purpose for a number of years before being replaced by a sub-notebook running Win98 (NetBook sized thing from Fujitsu) followed by a Clie T-415 and then a UX-50
The UX-50 is still in use pending the arrival (any minute now ...) of a K3.
