Niven does, but money
was a motivator. Part of his effort in his early days was to demonstrate he
could make a living as a writer, and he refused to touch his "independent means" to cover his basic living expenses.
He
did, as I understand it, dip into the trust fund to buy SF art, causing "It's not fair!" grumblings among those he outbid. Personally, I thought that was sour grapes. The artists were trying to make
their living from art, and if Larry had the money to pay them a better price than other bidders, so much the better.
