Are you typing it "symbol space"? I read in this thread or elsewhere the space was required, as in ". Fiction".

What really ticks me off about this kluge, aside from it not yet working for me, is that the Metadata contains all the information needed to sort a series correctly. There is a Series category which contains the name of the series and the series sequence. It's all there for Amazon to use, but they don't.

I guess the next step for me is to change my categories from the period to the underscore to see if that makes a difference. I'm using only one symbol since I want all categories to sort alphabetically.
