When I did my search, the Target I went to did not have an operational Kindle. It was on some type of wallpaper that flashed to different features of the Kindle on different screens.
I obviously decided on the nook and am happy I did, but who knows, if I had actually been able to try out the Kindle somewhere it might've made my decision even harder.
That's a huge plus of the nook to me, you can go right down to B&N anytime you need and get hands-on help, or even call them up with questions and talk to a live person (I called B&N a few times after getting my nook with a random question or two that their nook person happily answered).
