But that is not 'learning to read' so much as 'learning to play a game' or 'learning to use a computer.' They are different things. A book is a type of manipulative. An iPad is a type of technology. They are simply not the same things. I am not talking about 'developing a love of reading' or 'bonding with books.' I am talking about the skills a pre-reader needs to acquire (and demonstrate) in order to assess their readiness to learn to read. That cannot be replicated with technology.
