Excuses that just might work to convince your significant other that you really, really need to get the new Sony PS-505 Reader today:

Carefully tap the current screen with a ball-preen hammer, close the Reader, and ask them to carry it for you. When you retrieve it later and discover that the screen is broken, constantly reassure them that you don’t blame them and it could have happened to anyone.
Tell them that your eye doctor said that you were straining your eyes too much and needed higher contrast when reading like the screen of the new 505.
