I feel sorry that you didn't have a teacher that could bring the greatness of classics across to you. I read many classics in school and enjoyed most of them. Others (like Madame Bovary for instance) I will now give another chance. I had English teachers that were really able to spark the interest in me for Tennessee Williams, Steinbeck, Shakespeare or Orwell. It's probably the reason why I am still into books.

To the topic, I read the Great Gatsby recently and I have to say it is probably the greatest book I ever read. I know, it's sort of a no-brainer, but in case someone hasn't read it yet, do so
