two weeks ago I bought a PRS-500 on ebay for $250US. for Canadians this is a great time to buy anything from the States due to the currency parity.
The "textbook" version is that you will have to:
- Pay duties based on the value of the goods in Canadian funds.
Get the Canadian amount of the $250USX103=257 (the American dollar is at 0.97cent Canadian).
Multiply by the rate of duty, approx 4%, 257X0.04=$10.28
- pay Goods and Services Tax (GST),~6%
- pay Provincial Sales Tax (PST), ~7% or its equivalent depending on what Province you live in.
"By the book" you would pay
$10.28 duty
$18.90 GST
$16.20 PST
$45.38 total.
Now, I've heard, but never done this myself.... that if the seller declares it as a gift, no value quoted, chances are it will get past customs and none of the above will be charged.... But that's just a rumor and I would certainly not recommend it.....
Also, if you can wait, get the seller to ship via USPS instead of UPS or what have you. the shipping cost me $13! That's all! OK, it took 10 long days to get here, but....

Don't you get any expemtions. Our Customs wont charge you unless the total charge comes to more than $50 - In practise this means as long as the goods are below $NZ700 you don't have to pay anything to import. I did get cuaght with $100 tax when I recently bought an iRex tho. Luckily I was able to purchase thru my business and claim the GST back.
