No real ideas, but if no other answers appear, you could remove books and see how that goes.
When I was forced to remove over 470 books (leaving only about seven books) when I ran into the library books problem (compatibility of DRM'd ePub and PDF), it was a pain, but then I got a much faster 505, which didn't freeze anymore. I've built the 505's library back up to about 100 now, with good performance.
That's short of formatting the internal memory.
