In this particular case, I think it's because B&N just announced this on their Nook blog as one of the two "Free Friday" books, even though this one's been free for a while.

As for the dupes, I think it might have to do with Inkmesh and eBooks AddAll being glitchy and possibly relisting books as "new" freebies each time the price changes in another store, so people following them via Twitter or RSS or the like get the announcements and think it's something that hasn't been posted yet.

Not to mention, plenty of people never bother to read the manual, much less any posting guidelines or check past the first page of a forum (sometimes not even scrolling down), so they'll likely start new threads instead of bumping up old ones if they don't see it right away.
