i know from experience it's a long and tortuous process but this way you can easily adapt the file to whatever eReader you have/want rather than let the PDFs dictate what reader to buy.
and it might not be as long or as tortuous if the PDF is already well-formatted.

The PDFs that are easy to convert tend to be the ones that work fine with reflow, or just need the margins cropped out to look okay on the small screens.
Two-column journal articles with charts & tables don't convert well. Magazine PDFs are downright nightmarish. Even a number of mainstream novel have problems with headers & footers, and sometimes the fonts get really strange when converted. And sometimes they're locked against changes, or DRM'd; not everyone is willing to crack their ebooks before reading.
Unfortunately, the real solution is "convince content providers to use better PDF creation software, or offer their works in multiple formats," and that's not likely anytime soon.
