Indexing is a power drain. I wonder if these people are fully charging the battery before attempting to index or do other stuff. If they're indexing huge quantities of books, maybe low power is causing anomalies. It took me almost 2 hours of charging to get the green light; after that, I left the charger plugged in while downloading and indexing my books -- and I had no problems (which of course doesn't necessarily mean anything).

I bet Amazon will chase down the problem once they've tested a bunch of returned units.
I have seen others suggest it may have something to do with high use when the battery isn't fully charged--but some of the early reporting is going to be because people all happened to be trying to charge and do other things right out of the box...and so...more carefully collected data obviously needed. Over time I would think the clues would start to line up.

We can hope anyway!
