I have started to experiment with PDF cropping. Many PDFs have headers/footers that make the page taller and prevent full-screen view from using the screen real estate to its fullest By cropping them off, you can often get larger text. Kindle still displays the actual page number label.

If you have a Mac, Preview can do this. And there are free scripts and tools for it also.

Cropping doesn't destroy the contents that were cropped off, just creates guides that tell PDF viewing software what part of the page to display.
