Kindles do not support ePUB in any form. Amazon uses its version of Mobipocket with DRM. Both Kindle 2 and Kindle allow display of non DRM MOBI/PRC ebooks.

So there is a glimmer of the other side through the walled garden approach Amazon dictates.
