My K1 is still alive and well. I could sell it like new two years after getting it for my birthday. If you take sensible precautions (no hammers, don't cook it, try and avoid sitting on it) then your K3 will last you a good long time.

I do use my Kindle near water. I have a waterproof cover from Trendy Digital for my K1. It keeps out water and sand when I am at the beach. There are other cases that are waterproof, the M-Edge Guardian, and the Klear Kase, which is water resistant and made from the material used to manufacture windshields for the F16. The Guardian and KlearKase have to be adjusted for the K3 but should be available at some point in time.
