The fact that the meeting (private presentation) is today doesn't automatically mean the participants are free to talk about it today. I am pretty sure you will hear about it either later today or tomorrow. Thursday at the latest. Now, when Sony gives the OK to start speaking, there will be press photos and news all over the gadget blog scene.
As far as their timing is concerned, it may have been a little bad. It all depends on how big the announcement from Apple is going to be. Perhaps not a whole lot.
