I got this answer from Kobo-Help:
"Thank you for your message today. The next firmware upgrade will be a stepping stone that will need the 1.4 firmware for the upgrade to happen. You would be prompted to download the 1.4 prior to getting the next upgrade available after it."
It seems that I will have to bite the bullet!!
