I'm guessing that Amazon is using their own tracking number for the early phases of shipping within their own network and when they eventually hand it over to the Post Office, it will then show up at the USPS web site.

Yep. Some kind of hanky-panky here with the tracking number for the lighted cover. Clicking on "See Complete Tracking History", I now see:
Code:
Date Time Location Event Details
August 30, 2010 02:54:41 AM Fedex Smartpost US Departure Scan
August 30, 2010 02:54:00 AM --- Arrival Scan
August 27, 2010 08:16:46 PM Fedex Smartpost US Arrival Scan
August 25, 2010 07:38:00 PM US Shipment has left seller facility and is in transit
But, the USPS.com web site simply says:
Code:
Label/Receipt Number: 9102 nnnn nnnn nnnn nnnn nn
Class: Package Services
Service(s): Delivery Confirmation™
Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on
August 30, 2010 to expect your package for mailing. This does not
indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status
information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available,
is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later.
So, although Amazon.com accounts for the package from the time they changed its status to "shipped" on the 25th, they just told the post office about it today and have not yet passed the package along to them to deliver to my home. And, the original entry from 25 August now just says "US" as the location instead of "Lexington, KY" which I saw on Thursday.
