Many of the PDF books you purchase are DRMed, that is they have Digital Rights Management aspects that restrict what you can and cannot do with the file. These files will not convert using tools like pdflrf.
If by chance you have a purchased PDF that has no DRM (there are some, I even have a few) they can generally be transformed into an LRF. Remember that PDF is a wrapper and the contents inside may be text based, image based, or vector (Postscript) based. Text based is easy to convert through many programs including libprs500. Image based works well with pdflrf. Thankfully I have not seen a new vector based PDF in the last 8 years and all you can do is to convert it to an image based PDF (which reduces the quality) and transform that file.
