There are a couple issues with certain documents or document types that can prevent the device from going into sleep mode correctly. That may be part of your problem. They addressed some of that in the beta firmware, but I'm not sure if they've completely solved it yet.

To reiterate. My 8 day holiday was not a few hours of reading it was between 5 and 6 hours a day. That also included several demo's to people interested in what an e-reader could do. I am very impressed with battery life at this point. I must also add that, during the holiday, I read epub's and not pdf's. I can imagine that PDF rendering without reflow may require extra CPU cycles. The barnes and noble epub samples that require 2 to 3 minutes of counting pages, will obvoiusly impact battery lifetime. In fact the first time I opened one of the samples I was really worried that the reader had crashed. It hadn't but that's how it felt.
I do believe the new firmware helps. During the holiday the DR800 a friend of mine bought for his wife, also only epub's, with much less intensive use ran out of charge much faster. Mine after 8 days 50% hers after 8 days almost empty (under 25%,) I did not personally check the figures.
