First Sony was upgrading an antiquated device and it was more than a firmware upgrade, but I get your point. The good news was that Sony upgraded these old devices and acknowledged/fixed their upgrade mistake on their own dime.

I don't know about the rest, but the PRS-505 is the device with the most complaints in this area and I have never heard of a single time that one 505 had to be sent back because the user couldn't resolve what they perceived as their device being bricked.
