I think we're talking about two different things. A memory stick is quite bulky as opposed to a memory card that doesn't take any room. A lot of computers comes with built in card readers today.
You would not have to transfer the book once it's on the memory card, the Kindle should be able to read straight from the card without a transfer to the Kindle first.
Another scenario. You would like to compile a list of books (drm free) and give to your friend. Very easy to just give a memory card with the books on and the friend could just plug in the memory card and start reading.
