His bio even says that it was his first novel. I suppose he could have written a prequel, but that shouldn't disqualify The Killing Floor
I don't know if any of the books is a prequel or they just give bits of his past as they go along. But I'll go along with reading the series in published order.

All I know is #1 was very good and worth reading and I'll get to #2 soon.
