If you decide on a Kindle, I would definitely advice you to buy it through your American connections. There is no physical difference between the devices sold in USA or Europe. It's only dependant on what account it's registered to and what address is connected with the account.
I have an American address connected with my account set as default address and have so far not had any issues about buying Kindle books. But I don't buy a lot and perhaps simply fly below their radar. So to speak.
I think it's best to worry about what you need now rather than later. And who can say what Det Kongelige Bibliotek will offer in a year or two or three?

Well, I am glad to know that you have and successfully use a Kindle here!
And yes, biblioteket could change what they do...anytime. Besides, I don't know if they offer any books from my (hopeful) field of study in this format.
Now I just need to order one and pick it up (I am going to be in the USA for 3 weeks...we leave for a week in Mexico on Saturday, and then it will be 3 weeks with family in the states...in THEORY I should be able to order and receive a new Kindle in the time we have....)
