I love my Kindle 2 but it is a lumbering ugly beast next to my Sony readers. But I love Amazon and I love the selection of books and ease of purchasing for the Kindle. If my Kindle dies I need to buy another Kindle in order to read my books on an e-ink device. (Backlight reading strains my eyes). For me I will always buy books from Sony, Borders, Kobobooks, or Booksonboard before I purchase them from Amazon. The only books I buy from Amazon are the ones not available from the others. I just feel more secure in my purchase that way.
If Sony can match Amazon in the ease of purchase category, and pump some marketing dollars into the Sony reader, or even give one to Oprah as a retirement gift so she can tell the O-bots how cool it is then they can regain shares lost to Amazon.
If Sony plays it right then I think 2011 will put them second behind Amazon, then B&N and then Borders. I don't count Apple as the iPad is an over sized iPod and not a dedicated reader, they can sell 3 million but that doesn't mean everyone is reading on them.
I think if Sony updates ADE, has no touch layer, uses Pearl, has wifi/3G, the 650 could be better then the K3. Year reasoning of being able to take the ePub you bought and being able to use them on a different device is a very valid point. And with a Kindle, the DRM locks you into Amazon. so if you wanted to get say a Pocketbook, Sony, nook, or Kobo, you'd not be able to take your Kindle eBooks with you. But remember, if you do not want vendor lock in, do not buy eBooks from B&N.
