They are wide enough to use without having to look, it helps that the buttons slope towards the outer edge of the Kindle & therefore you can easily feel where the button begins.

I do keep making the mistake of expecting the largest button on the left to take me back a page, but I'm guessing even the previous models were set up that way. I'm starting to learn to hold it so my right thumb is next to the page forward button and my left thumb near the page back.
