Yes, when you are outside and you want to read, having the screen fade makes it unusable. I've seen the sunlight fade bad enough that placing a finger on the screen, turning the page and then removing said finger shows where the finger was when the page was turned.
So yes, testing the reader before selling it would have been a good idea.
I do hope that it is under warranty because if not, to get it fixed will cost more then 1/2 of what you sold it for.
