I must admit that having lived with it a bit, I think you may be right. (And I've said before how much I like your covers.)

I'm currently working on the glossary entries for Catriona (the sequel to Kidnapped), and also a cover for that, which I want to match (of course). I attach what I have so far. I think I'll certainly try again with serif fonts and see if I can reach a happy medium between appearance in thumbnail and full size.
