There is a difference between a hard reset and a reset to factory defaults. The former does not erase the books from the reader, the latter does.

Putting aside how the issue might arise, there is something you can do to help determine whether or not the date is the problem. The procedure will also give me a clue how to fix it (if it is indeed the problem).

What I want to see is the reader's database entry for the book just after calibre sends it, and again after the reader has been unplugged so the the reader's software has a chance at it. If you have the time and energy, could you:
1) start calibre. Send a book. Remember the title.
2) stop calibre. Do not eject the device.
3) using a file explorer, go to the 300's memory/disk drive. Then go further to the folder 'database/cache'. There will be a file there named 'media.xml'.
4) Open the file media.xml with a text editor. If you are using windows, try using wordpad. Search for the book you just added. Copy the line (it is long) and paste it somewhere, perhaps a reply to this post. Close the file media.xml.
5) unplug the sony. Wait until it is happy, then plug it in again.
6) repeat step 4.

If I am right, then the lines found in steps 4 and 6 will be different. The line saved in step 4 will have the author in 'author_sort' order. The line saved in step 6 will have the author in 'author' order. The dates on the two lines will differ.

Thanks for your help!
