A USB pen is plastic housing around Nand flash memory. There's nothing about that that going through the wash will break.

All USB drives aren't created equal, and I can imagine cases where going through the wash would kill one, simply because the housing was flimsy. (I've seen things like that in SD cards from no-name manufacturers, where the housing for the card came apart.)

But for the most part, they're pretty resilient.
