This is a cool idea. But when I bought an ereader for my brother when he was deployed to Iraq, he sent it back to me, citing the following reasons: 1. Something will fall on it and break the screen or 2. SAND.

It could work for non-combative troops, or for locations that don't see sand storms every week.
