But the devices are perfectly capable of, say, defining "modes", so you could have alarm clock mode, gaming mode, meeting mode, funeral mode etc. - and reading mode.

What I'd like on my new smartphone is an "auto-off" function (I suppose some must have it, but I haven't found it for mine), because I keep forgetting to switch it off at night and it sits there draining the battery all night, sometimes even waking me up in the middle of it to complain that it needs to be recharged

Plus all the notifications, but I have the sound set up low so I usually don't hear them.
