New prs-600 not recognized by system after multiple resets

I Recently purchased a PRS-600 reader.
From my first use of it, the "connected via USB" display would appear on the screen the device after several minutes of being plugged in, but the comp. either fails to recognize it completely, or shows new drives on "My computer" but denies access to them (in this case, the Reader Library also fails to recognize the device).

I haven't charged it for a few hours the first time I plugged it in, so this may be the issue. However, it does appear to be charging, showing a red light when plugged in and a blinking orange one when disconnected. When in the latter state, it cannot be turned on.

I have managed to turn it on a few times after having it plugged in for a few hours and having the battery presumably reach full capacity, and in those instances it works fine, but there is no method of getting it to digitally (rather than electronically) connect to the computer.

Is it possible that the filesystem is so corrupted that the hard-disk of the device needs replacing?
what other methods can i use to try to fix it without outside help?
